The Backbiter (Al-Humazah)
Verses 1-9 GROUP_1588 104.1-9
1
وَيْلٌ لِّكُلِّ هُمَزَةٍ لُّمَزَةٍ
Woe to every fault-finding back-biter,
2
الَّذِي جَمَعَ مَالًا وَعَدَّدَهُ
who amasses wealth, counting it over,
3
يَحْسَبُ أَنَّ مَالَهُ أَخْلَدَهُ
thinking that his wealth will make him live forever.
4
كَلَّا لَيُنبَذَنَّ فِي الْحُطَمَةِ
By no means! He shall surely be cast into the crushing torment.
5
وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْحُطَمَةُ
Would that you understood what that crushing torment is like.
6
نَارُ اللَّهِ الْمُوقَدَةُ
It is a Fire kindled by God.
7
الَّتِي تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى الْأَفْئِدَةِ
Reaching right into the hearts of men,
8
إِنَّهَا عَلَيْهِم مُّؤْصَدَةٌ
it closes in on them from every side
9
فِي عَمَدٍ مُّمَدَّدَةٍ
in towering columns.

Commentary
(a) If a man has a difference with another, he can settle it by argument. But it is not proper for him to denigrate the other person, defame him and make him the target of allegations. While the first course of action is legitimate, the second is not. Those who resort to calumny, do so because they see that their worldly position is safe and strong. They think that they are not going to lose anything if they level baseless allegations against another. But this is mere foolishness. The fact is that their doing so amounts to jumping into a pit of fire—a pit of fire from which there will be no escape.
